About

An interdisciplinary research unit based at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, our work is focused on children's language development in Africa. With a current focus on languages of Southern Africa, our aims are both scientific and applied. We seek to generate knowledge about young children’s language development and difficulties, and use this to develop culturally appropriate tools for valid and reliable language assessment. Our team consists of speech-language therapists, audiologists, linguists, paediatricians, public health specialists and psychologists. If we can establish the trajectory of early language development in children and develop reliable and valid instruments for assessment, we can then identify children at risk in the very early stages of their development. Effective early interventions lead to better educational outcomes, increase life-chances and ultimately contribute to decreasing social inequality.

Projects

Current projects focus mainly on the languages of Southern Africa and include our national project on development of Communicative Development Inventories for local languages, development of Southern African language versions of the Picture Naming Game (PiNG), phonology assessments, and LinguaAfrica, a resource repository for health-related resources in African languages.

Team

Our team consists of speech-language therapists, audiologists, linguists, paediatricians, public health specialists and psychologists working together with our directors.
